APPLE's Community Involvement
Your credit union is very involved in the community hosting and fundraising events that make a difference in people’s lives. Annually we host a Shelter House BBQ with all proceeds going to that organization. Each year in December we raise money for Faye Peterson Transition House through our "Buy a Bear" Campaign. We assist our local students by giving out three scholarships to high school graduates continuing their education. A percentage of every dollar our members spend on their Credit Union Mastercard is donated by APPLE each year to a local organization in the medical field in the form of ICARE dollars. We have representation on ZWAT- Zero Waste Action Team and are committed to reducing energy and waste in our office.
Along with supporting the above initiatives, your staff and board volunteer their time on various boards of non-profit and community organizations and volunteer their services to local charities. We are truly committed to making this community a great place to live.
Shelter House Barbeque
Annually, the APPLE Board of Directors host a BBQ for the community with all proceeds going to the Thunder Bay Shelter House. This very successful event has helpd many needy families by contributing on average $1,000 per event for almost a decade. We will be partnering with the Ontario Credit Union Charitable Foundation to double that amount. This annual event takes place every September. Come out and let our “master chefs” cook you lunch; and know you are helping out those in need! Watch for the exact date on our home page!
Faye Peterson Transition House Campaign
Every December we start a “bear” train in our office. For $5 you can purchase your own bear to ride the train. All proceeds go to the Fay Peterson Transition House just in time for Christmas. Our goal each year is to wrap the train around our entire front office. Thanks to our very generous members, we have been able to reach that goal each year. Anyone can purchase a bear for themselves or on behalf of someone else. Come to the office in December and help make Christmas a reality for those less fortunate. We are partnering with the Ontario Credit Union Charitable Foundation to double the contribution to the campaign. Click for more information on the Faye Peterson Transition House.
Scholarships
APPLES and education go hand in hand! Yes, we have scholarships! APPLE is committed every year to award a $250 scholarship to 3 high school graduates continuing their education in a post-secondary institution. The graduate must be a member or the son/daughter or grandson/granddaughter of an APPLE member. Applications will be available each April and can be accessed through our website, or you can pick a copy up at our office. All Thunder Bay High Schools will have applications or information at their guidance department. The complete criteria for qualification will be on the application.
So, if you know of a young adult that may be deserving of this scholarship direct them to our website or have them contact their guidance department or us directly for more information.
ICare
Each year APPLE Community Credit Union will donate a portion of every dollar you spend on your APPLE Community Credit Union Mastercard to a local medical organization. In the past we have helped:
- The neo-natal department of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Science Centre
- The George Jeffrey Treatment Centre
- Aids Thunder Bay
So along with getting Choice Reward points by using your Mastercard for yourself, by using your ICARE Credit Union Mastercard you are also helping organizations providing much needed medical care in your own community. Thank you Mastercard members!!
ZWAT
The environment is important to us all. We are proud to be a member of this organization and to be doing our part to help reduce our waste and consumption of energy at APPLE Community Credit Union.
The ZERO WASTE ACTION TEAM (ZWATeam) is comprised of members of the commercial, industrial and institutional sector, advisors, community organizations and citizens working together since 1992 to eliminate waste, manage resources and promote local jobs and economic self-sufficiency. Ontarians produce almost a tonne of waste each a year; this is an unacceptable waste of precious land and resources. The goal of "Zero Waste" is to eliminate 100% of the waste presently being generated using Nature as a model. The ZWATeam has adopted 5Rs - Rethink, Refuse, Reduce Reuse and then Recycle.
In 2006, the Lake Superior Binational Program presented the ZWATeam with an Environmental Stewardship Award. In 2007, the City of Thunder Bay recognized the ZWATeam for "Exceptional Leadership and Dedication to Community Sustainability." In 2008, the ZWATeam was recognized for "Exceptional Performance and Dedication to improving the Great Lakes" for their Electronic Waste Pilot Project.
